Learning about the faith of others helps us to grow deeper in our own faith. Children take part in our weekly Sunday School, while we offer periodic studies that focus on engaging conversations about our understanding of God. Often the studies are framed around liturgical seasons.
All volunteers involved have had CORI and SORI checks. The Sunday School program serves children and youth from infancy through 8th grade. All children and youth, other than Nursery, start their Sunday in the sanctuary and participate in the first portion of worship. They then leave to attend classes with their teachers after the Children’s Moment. All classes end at 11:15 and children should be picked up at that time.
Percentage of Children Welcome at Paxton UCC!
Nursery/Toddler (up to age 4)
For Kids using the Nursery/Toddler room, each year parents must complete a Nursery/Toddler Permission form, which is kept on file in the room with your child. In addition children must be signed in and out by either a parent or someone who has received authority from the parents. Parents drop off children to the Nursery/Toddler room (located downstairs off of Fellowship Hall).
Kindergarten (ages 4/5) - 6th Grade
The Kindergarten through 6th Grade classes use the Spark Active Faith Sunday School curriculum, published by Augsburg Fortress. This curriculum guides the teachers and Kids in developing their faith together with age appropriate Bible stories, activities and prayers. The Sunday School program is an opportunity for Kids to learn about Christian values, and see those values reflected in the caring adults who staff the program.
7th & 8th Grade
The 7th and 8th grade class learns lessons based on Middle School Talksheet discussions, published by Zondervan, as well as other lessons developed by the Christian Education Director. The Talksheet lessons provide a springboard for discussions on real life issues which are connected to scripture and teachings from the Bible.
This 4-class interactive program is offered to 6th-8th grade Kids to lead them to a better understanding of why and how we practice baptism and communion allowing them to participate in worship more fully and reverently.
Confirmation program is an intensive year long program offered to High School Freshmen but any high school age youth can participate. It’s a place to question and explore their faith without judgement as well as learn what it means to take the next step on their faith journey.
Grace Notes & Joy Singers Children's Choir
Come Make a Joyful Noise!
All kids grade 2 through 8 are welcome to add their voice, big or small. Director Mrs. Cindy Shea will be sure to save you a seat at rehearsals most Sundays during the school year from 11:15-11:45am Note: Any interested high school singers are also welcome to join the senior choir, which rehearses Thursday nights from 7-9.
Let Your Light Shine!
The Acolyte Program (lighting and extinguishing the candles in the worship service) is for grades 4 through 8. This program teaches kids the significance, history and meaning behind being an Acolyte in our church. It is a wonderful way for this age group to contribute to our weekly worship service.
Jr Missions Youth Group
Outreach with Spirit!
Jr. Missions Youth Group is a great way for the 6th – 8th graders to spend a little extra time together participating in Christian service and having fun! Movie nights and outings to fun events are interspersed with missions and service work to reach out and help others in the greater community.
Senior High Opportunities
In addition to the Senior High Youth Group, there are a variety of ways in which high school kids can participate. 9th grade and up can help out in worship. Those in 10th Grade and up can volunteer in the Sunday School classrooms as assistants. Senior High students typically develop the Easter Sunrise and Youth Sunday worship, with a little help and encouragement from the adults.
Although we think of Sunday School as something for children and youth, Christian Education as an adult is an integral part of one’s faith development. It provides an opportunity for us to gather in fellowship and to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus by studying God’s Word. We are able to seek the relevance of the Scripture in our lives and to gain the support of others in our faith community. Adult Christian education is an essential aspect of our entire faith journey.
Throughout the year, we will offer a different faith exploration class or group. Find the one you are most drawn to, or attend them all. Watch this website for an update!
